Kaua’i Community Coalition
In 1987, the Kaua’i County Council first approved a law restricting smoking in certain places. In October 2002, the Council passed an amendment to the law to include larger workplaces and all restaurants. Then in 2006 the state-wide ban on smoking in public and workplaces was enacted and included workplaces that might have been exempt from the county ordinance.
Kauai’s coalition, Tobacco-Free Kaua’i, is active in a number of areas including work on smoke-free policy initiatives on Kaua’i. We also offer the Tar Wars program and American Lungs Association’s Word of Mouth program to more than 1,000 fifth graders. This program is designed to reach youth at an early age to tell them about the dangers of smoking and advise them never to start.
Tobacco-Free Kauai also offers Brief Tobacco Intervention Skills training to all first-year nursing students at Kauai Community College. This training offers the skills needed to assist clients in seeking treatment to reduce or quit tobacco use.
