Aloha,

I am thrilled to share information about two important events the Coalition is planning. First, instead of our traditional semi-annual meeting, we have the fortune to be able to offer an interactive advocacy and leadership training. Rod Lew and other members of the APPEAL team will be here Thursday, March 29, 2012 to conduct their acclaimed and successful “Advocacy and Leadership” training. Through a partnership with the Department of Health’s Tobacco Prevention and Education Program, we are able to offer this rare opportunity to you at no charge. We have limited Neighbor Island travel scholarships. Contact diane@tobaccofreehawaii.org for more information. Click here to register on-line.

Also, please mark your calendar for our third annual Deadly in Pink event. The event is growing, so this year we will be at The Pacific Club. The event is designed to raise awareness about the tobacco industry’s practice of targeting girls and women, while at the same time putting FUN in our fundraising. The champagne brunch is scheduled for May 19, 2012, from 10 am to 1 pm. Last year, people loved the Zumba, face painting, glamous nails, and pink boas. The dessert auction stole the show with an imagineered, fully replicated Gucchi bag made of chocolate. Buy your ticket or sponsor a table today.

A legislative update by our new Policy & Advocacy Director, Jessica Yamauchi is below. A sincere thank you to all of you who responded to our calls to action.

Sincerely,

Deborah Zysman, MPH

Executive Director

REAL will be airing a PSA in March that addresses the issue of tobacco product marketing. Check out REAL’s website and preview the great PSA here.

Coalition–Staff Updates

In December 2011, we said goodbye to Trisha Nakamura and thanked her for her dedicated work with the Coalition as our Policy & Advocacy Director. Trisha decided move on to a new position with the Public Defender’s office. She is practicing law and honing her craft. We sincerely wish her well.

Our own Jessica Yamauchi, was chosen as the new Policy and Advocacy Director, leaving her position as Oahu Community Coordinator. Jessica had previous work experience at the legislature and she is definitely putting that experience to work. Below is Jessica’s update on the legislative front.

Legislative Update 2012

We are almost half way through the legislative session and The Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawai’i would like to thank all of you for your support. All of your testimony, e-mails, and phone calls to lawmakers helped protect our smoke-free workplace law. As you may have heard, the House Economic Revitalization and Business Committee passed HB 2306 out of committee. HB 2306 would have allowed bars and nightclubs to permit smoking. With the help of all of our partners and members, we were able to see the bill die on the House floor the very next day. MAHALO for your support! If you would like to sign up as an advocate or get more involved in the Coalition please contact Jessica Yamauchi at jessica@tobaccofreehawaii.org or 591-6508 x205.

UH Manoa Associated Students Support a Tobacco-Free Campus

The Manoa Experience is an annual event open to all students and their families interested in learning more about UHM. The event was held this past saturday from 9-noon on the UHM campus. There were informational booths, a student services fair, and campus and residence hall tours. Supporters printed signs and 30 of the tables at the event agreed to display them and distribute stickers with the same message. Over 75 stickers were distrbuted. Most people voiced support and were enthusiastic about a tobacco-free campus. The best placement was the primary information booth. The receptionist wore the sticker and also had the sign in plain view.

The ASUH submitted for signature a Resolution to make the University of Hawaii at Manoa tobacco-Free. The Resolution was delivered to the Chancellor and the President along with other administration at Manoa and the UH system. Students hope the Chancellor will initiate a tobacco-free policy.
