Maui Tobacco-Free Partnership
In 1997, the Maui County Council passed a law relating to smoking in public places. In August 2002, the Council passed a bill amending the law to include restaurants. The provisions of this amendment will go into effect January 1, 2003.
Public places covered under the bill include all areas of restaurants (indoor and outdoor dining areas and bar areas), elevators, hospitals, auditoriums, movie theatres, museums, libraries, galleries, grocery stores, drug stores, banks, day care nurseries, retail stores, restrooms, common areas in apartments, public areas of hotels, and taxicabs.
Free-standing bars and nightclubs are not covered by the current law.
The Maui coalition, Maui Tobacco-Free Partnership, is very active on a number of projects including working towards a smoke-free workplace bill; on youth programs such as Kick Butts Day and the Hana Youth Tobacco Summit; and on community programs like World No Tobacco Day Fair and Start Living Healthy.
